Pesci said in the People interview, "I did sustain serious burns to the top of my head during the scene where Harry's hat is set on fire." On the set, Pesci and Stern both had difficulty refraining from cursing, which became annoying to Pesci, since Culkin was on set as well. Pesci's use of "cartoon cursing", or menacing gibberish, garnered comparisons to Looney Tunes character Yosemite Sam. Hughes suggested to Columbus that they cast Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, because of his experience while shooting Uncle Buck.

According to Chris Columbus, Kevin Nordine did all of the effects for this movie in his parents' basement in Chicago by drawing all of the effects onto the film.
Originally, there was a scene (featured on DVD and Blu-ray) with the McCallisters ignoring the sign and tearing it in half by running right through it, but it was cut from this movie. The boy who played Kevin's cousin Fuller is Macaulay Culkin's brother Kieran in his feature film debut. Chris Columbus' previous movie had not done well at the box office, and he was worried he would never direct again, but then John Hughes sent him the script for this movie. (At around fifty-three minutes) Despite filming a family movie, Daniel Stern once slipped in the "s" word, which can be heard when he is retrieving his boot through the doggy door, as well as being shown in the English subtitle.

Every day gets us a little bit closer to Christmas, and you know what that means — it's time to binge on some holiday movies. Home Alone is always one in my rotation and it's celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Hughes promised that he could make the movie for less than $10 million, considerably less than most feature film production budgets of that era. Concerned that the film might exceed that amount, Hughes met secretly with 20th Century Fox before production to see if they would fund the project if Warner proved inflexible. According to executive producer Scott Rosenfelt, a copy of the script was "clandestinely" delivered to Fox, bypassing the legal restrictions that would have otherwise prevented Fox from seeing it until the project was in turnaround. Warner demanded that it be cut by $1.2 million; the producers responded with a memo arguing that the budget could not be cut any further.
